RVing Yellowstone: The Ultimate Planning Guide
Old Faithful, bison jams, and boiling hot springs — here's how to plan the perfect Yellowstone RV trip.
RVing Yellowstone: The Ultimate Planning Guide
Yellowstone is unlike anywhere else on Earth. Geysers erupt on schedule. Bison wander across the road without a care. Hot springs glow in impossible shades of blue and orange. And all of it is accessible by RV — if you plan ahead.
Here's everything you need to know to make your Yellowstone RV trip unforgettable.
When to Go
Yellowstone is open year-round, but most RV travelers visit between May and October when all roads and campgrounds are accessible.
- June–August: Peak season. Expect crowds, higher campground rates, and wildlife viewing at its best. Book campgrounds 6+ months in advance.
- May and September: Shoulder season. Fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and better availability. Often the best time to visit.
- October: Fall colors, rutting elk, and dramatically fewer tourists. Some facilities begin closing mid-month.
Getting There
Yellowstone has five entrances. The most popular for RV travelers:
- North Entrance (Gardiner, MT): Open year-round, closest to Mammoth Hot Springs.
- West Entrance (West Yellowstone, MT): Most popular entrance, closest to Old Faithful.
- South Entrance (Jackson, WY): Scenic drive through Grand Teton National Park.
Important: Many roads inside the park have size restrictions. Vehicles over 45 feet (including tow vehicles) are prohibited on certain roads, including the road to the Firehole Lake Drive and parts of the Northeast Entrance Road. Check the NPS website for current restrictions before you go.
Campgrounds Inside the Park
Yellowstone has 12 campgrounds with over 2,000 sites. A few highlights:
Madison Campground
Central location, close to Old Faithful and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. No hookups, but a generator-friendly campground. Reservable through Recreation.gov.
Bridge Bay Campground
On the shores of Yellowstone Lake — one of the most scenic campgrounds in the park. Large sites accommodate big rigs. Reservable.
Norris Campground
Quieter and more wooded, close to the Norris Geyser Basin. First-come, first-served.
Pro tip: Book Madison and Bridge Bay as soon as reservations open (typically in January for the following summer). They sell out within hours.
Must-See Attractions
Old Faithful
The world's most famous geyser erupts approximately every 90 minutes. Arrive 20–30 minutes early to get a good spot. The Old Faithful Inn nearby is worth a look even if you're not staying there.
Grand Prismatic Spring
The largest hot spring in the United States and one of the most photographed spots in the park. The overlook trail gives you the aerial view you've seen in photos.
Lamar Valley
Known as "America's Serengeti," Lamar Valley offers the best wildlife viewing in the park. Dawn and dusk are prime times for spotting wolves, bears, bison, and pronghorn.
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
Two dramatic waterfalls and a canyon that rivals the Grand Canyon in color. The Lower Falls viewpoint is a short walk from the parking area.
Driving Tips
- Speed limit is 45 mph throughout most of the park. Bison jams are real — be patient.
- Fill up before entering. Gas is available inside the park but expensive.
- Avoid driving at dawn and dusk if you're not comfortable with wildlife on the road.
- Slide-outs: Many campground sites are tight. Know your rig's dimensions before you extend.
What to Pack
Beyond your standard RV kit, Yellowstone-specific essentials include:
- Bear spray (available at park stores)
- Layers — temperatures can swing 40°F in a single day
- Binoculars for wildlife viewing
- A physical park map (cell service is limited)
Booking Your Trip

Yellowstone is one of the most rewarding RV destinations in the country. The combination of geothermal wonders, wildlife, and sheer scale is unmatched. Plan ahead, go slow, and let the park surprise you.
